If you are planning to use public transportation, we are recommending you to get “İstanbul Kart” instead of one/two/three pass tickets. You can use the İstanbul Kart again and again if you are out of money you can put more money in your card from the yellow machines located in all stations of the public transportation system except the bus stations. There is also one machine in the MED Building.
These machines don’t accept changes or credit cards so make sure you have you have Turkish Lira with you. Also they are not designed to give back changes so be aware of how much money you are inserting to the machine so you won’t end up with 100 TL worth of credit.
When you are buying İstanbul Kart for the first time you have to pay 6 TL. But this is a onetime payment and İstanbul Kart costs less after a few rides. While one pass tickets cost 5 TL and two pass tickets cost 8 TL, İstanbul Kart charges only 2.60 per ride and 1.85 when you are transferring to another public transportation. One İstanbul Kart can be used by more than one person but the downside of that is only one passenger will be able to discounted price for transfers.
For loading money in your İstanbul Kart, you first need to place your card to purple marked area. Then insert your money to the green marked area. Also you can check your balance by placing your card to the same purple marked area.
This is the map of the Metro, Marmaray and Metrobüs lines in İstanbul. Addition to these we have buses, minibuses and ferries. You can use all public transportation except from minibuses with İstanbul Kart.
To use subways, you have to pass the toll bars. Look for the ones that have green arrows on them, they are the ones for entering subway. Then you have to place your İstanbul Kart/ Pass Ticket to the orange area so machine can read your card. You’ll hear beep sound after than this you can pass. If you are in a crowded station, there might be lots of beeps coming from different machines, if that’s the case just check the screen. You can pass when machine is showing your balance on the screen. (Don’t spend too much time even though you want to learn your balance, you have few seconds to pass the toll gate. You can check your balance from the yellow machines mentioned above when you are exiting the subway) Because of the traffic, subway is mostly a better option instead of buses or taxis.
To use buses, you have to wait for them in designated stops. The buses have different codes for each line. Also some of the stops they stop can be written on the bus. When you are getting on you have to scan your İstanbul Kart/ Pass ticket to the little orange machine at your right side, next to the driver. If the next station is the station you want to get off, you have to press the red buttons which says STOP on the bars. So the driver knows someone wants to get off. There are red lights or signs that says DURACAK on the doors. If that door is going to open at next station the light turns on.
You can check the bus stops, bus routes, bus schedules from this website http://www.iett.istanbul/en
You can also download the app called MOBİETT which serves the same purpose but it might have fancier options

Minibuses do not accept İstanbul Kart as mentioned above. You have to pay with actual money. Prices vary depending on where did you get on the minibus and where will you get off. Minibuses have specific routes but they don’t have stops. If you want to get on you can raise your hand just like calling a cab. When you want to get off you have to say that to driver so he can stop. BUT most of the drivers do not speak English (maybe none of them speak English). So it’s not recommended foreign guests to use these vehicles unless it’s necessary.
